(Same as ANTH 355) Since it extends well beyond religion, cosmology, and politics, ritual language is a multifarious beast. Whether speakers summon ancestors back to Earth, pray to sacred beings, pursue political influence through authoritative oratory, or produce patterned gossip in social/mass media, they all deploy ritual speech. This seminar provides an advanced introduction to anthropological, linguistic, historical, religious, and political approaches to ritual language. David Tavarez.
