GEOG 284 - History of American Environmentalism(s) Semester Offered: Spring 1 unit(s) (Same as AMST 284 and ENST 284 ) This course examines the conceptual foundation, goal, and actions of a range of broadly defined American environmentalisms, as well as the political conflicts and material outcomes associated with these movements. Topics include an investigation of progressive era preservation and conservation, national parks and protected areas, ‘mainstream’ enviromentalism of the mid 20th century and associated policy innovations, environmental justice, radical ecocentrism, sustainable development and liberal environmentalism. These various developments are explored through an analytical lens focused on issues of power and politics and grounded in investigation of the events, personages, philosophies, and historical/cultural processes associated with attempts to protect nature and the critical responses they engendered. Through these explorations the course aims to expand our understanding of the history, challenges, and limitations of American environmental movements past and present. Ryan Hackett.
