AFRS 380 - Race, Nation, and Religion in America

(Same as AMST 380 and RELI 380) The concepts of race, religion, and nation organize antagonistic conceptions of “America.” This course aims to theorize how those ideas of “America” are mobilized in contemporary culture, and how each concept implicitly works to organize the others. We read foundational texts in the theories of religion and nation, and will look at case studies ranging from television to memorials to understand how normative ideas of America (what America should be) are given concrete form. Students develop their own case studies to bring into focus how the course’s central concepts work in contemporary culture. David Le.
