Topic for 2024/25b: Sepharad: Jewish Spain. A consideration of the historical and cultural legacy of Spain’s important Jewish population before 1492 and the literary and material remains of this rich and diverse culture after the Expulsion. The relationship between Spain and her Jews is an exemplary case of both symbiosis and of stratification. And the manner in which Spain and Catalunya have reckoned with their Jewish past is a significant part of the discussion. Our travel to Spain reveals both the few and subtle remnants of the Spanish/Jewish encounter, and the sites of projected or fantasized historical memory. Marc Epstein.

Offered Spring semester in alternating years.
