Algonquin elder William Commanda said, “Indians are born into politics.” Ojibway/Métis comedian and media maker Ryan McMahon wrote about his grandfather’s words to him at a young age: “Everything you do is political – you’re Anishinabe.” Native American and Indigenous peoples articulate their understanding of the self in relation to a political identity. This course introduces the schools of Indigenous political thought and considers the many ways politics play into the life of Indigenous peoples, ranging from theories of sovereignty to Indigenous international politics to major social movements. With readings in political theory, history, philosophy and literature, we explore the multiple perspectives of Indigenous communities and political organizations, Indigenous politicians and everyday folks on the rez.
