PHIL 220 - Metaphysics

Semester Offered: Fall
1 unit(s)
This course introduces students to key questions and debates in metaphysics, drawing on both Indian and Western philosophical traditions. Through close reading and critical analysis of classic and contemporary texts, students explore fundamental issues, including personal identity, causation, and the existence of an external world. By examining the distinct approaches, underlying assumptions, and conceptual frameworks employed by thinkers in each tradition, students develop a nuanced understanding of the similarities and differences between Indian and Western metaphysics. Students learn to critically reconstruct and evaluate metaphysical arguments from diverse philosophical perspectives. Ultimately, this course aims to provide students with a deep appreciation for the richness of metaphysical debates across these two major philosophical traditions. Lee Ling Ting.
