HISP 388 - Peninsular Seminar

Semester Offered: Spring
1 unit(s)
Topic for 2024/25b: Spain and Morocco: Colonization and Immigration. This course explores the historical and cultural intersections between Spain and Morocco. The first part focuses on the colonial policies of Spain and studies texts written by Spanish journalists, doctors and soldiers during the Spanish-Moroccan wars. We examine the construction of a modern historical imaginary about Moroccans by Spaniards, and the resistance of the Imazighen (North African indigenous groups) against Spanish colonialism. The exploration spans the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries, with the second part focusing on contemporary Moroccan immigration to Spain. Our analysis includes TV series, films, documentaries, novels, testimonies, short stories, painting, and music, presenting varied modes of expression and formal experimentation. Omar Badessi.

One 2-hour period.
