ENGL 304 - Creative Writing Seminar

Topic for 2024/25a: Writing About the Anthropocene. This course attends to the elements of craft—voice, structure, point of view, language and rhythm—but the focus is on the fire and urgency of nature writing. The books we read include Thoreau’s Walden, Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring, Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer, The Great Derangement by Amitav Ghosh, and Jeff Goodell’s The Heat Will Kill You First. Students engage in weekly writing and present their writing in workshops. Amitava Kumar.

Prerequisite(s): Open to juniors and seniors who have taken ENGL 207 ENGL 209 , or ENGL 211 .

In order to register for this class, students should complete an application prior to preregistration, using a form available in the English Department in lieu of writing samples. Notification of acceptance is given before preregistration begins. Please do not contact the professor. 

One 2-hour period and individual conferences with the instructor.
