CHIN 290 - Community-Engaged Learning

One-half or one unit individual or group field projects or internships. May be elected during the academic year or during the summer. Offered only pass/fail and permission of the chair is required. Open to all students.

Topic for 2024/25b: Local Chinese Community Language School Immersion. Chinese Community Schools play a large role in preserving and promoting Chinese language, culture, and traditions among younger generations, as well as fostering a sense of community and identity among Chinese diaspora communities. Students will work with a local Chinese community school, the Mid-Hudson Chinese Language Center (MHCLC), and read academic articles about the relationship between Chinese community schools, Chinese immigrant populations, and their larger communities. This intensive includes discussion sessions and volunteer work co-facilitated in collaboration with Principal Fenlan Lin and Professor Sun-Wan Chien of the Mid-Hudson Chinese Language Center. Two hours every other week.
