PHIL 294 - Film and Philosophy: Ingmar Bergman

Semester Offered: Spring
0.5 unit(s)
This Intensive provides an introduction to the philosophy of film through the study of several films written and directed by the Swedish filmmaker, Ingmar Bergman (1918–2007). Films such as The Seventh Seal, Persona, and Fanny and Alexander have attracted sustained philosophical interest for their explorations of alienation, mortality, the “death of God”, personal identity, creativity, and love. Along with studies of selected films, we read scholarship on the aesthetics of film, auteur theory, and the status of film as a medium for philosophy. Christopher Raymond.

Prerequisite(s): One course in Philosophy or Film, or permission of the instructor.

Second six-week course.

Two 75-minute periods.
