AFRS 237 - Gender and Sexuality in Black America

Semester Offered: Spring
1 unit(s)
(Same as HIST 237  and WFQS 237 )  African American history is also the history of gender and sexuality. As structural racism imposed sexual rules on Black Americans, they responded with their own creative expressions of gender and sexuality. The course begins by exploring how experiences of slavery differed across gender, Black women articulated abolitionism, and legislation against interracial desire shaped American politics. We then consider an array of twentieth-century Black feminist, trans, and queer movements: the National Welfare Rights Organization Combahee River Collective, STAR, and more. Allison Puglisi.

Two 75-minute periods.

Course Format: CLS
