(Same as URBS 240 ) A period of emancipations, industrial development, dramatic urban growth, imperial expansion, nation formation, migrations, and cultural exchange, the long nineteenth century (1789-1914) saw the rise of new theories and practices of architecture and urbanism. This course offers analytic tools to investigate canonical and non-canonical buildings and urban landscapes, critical histories of the relationships between local and global culture, race, and space, and the projects of modernization, modernity, and modernism.
