LALS 105 - Conceptualizing Latin and Latinx America Semester Offered: Spring 1 unit(s) Topic for 2023/24b: Introduction to Latin American and Latinx Studies Concepts and Theories. This course introduces us to Latin American and Latinx communities’ histories, cultures, politics, and economies. Featuring texts by sociologists, political scientists, anthropologists, historians, and cultural theorists, this course looks at the impact of colonialism, nationalism, neoliberalism, and social movements on Latin Americans and Latinx populations in the United States. Taking on an interdisciplinary approach that integrates Latin American studies with Latinx Studies, we discuss concepts and theories, such as transnationalism, intersectionality, and structural inequalities, to situate the inter-ethnic relations and diversity of Latinx communities. By analyzing the relationship between race, racism, migration, and transnational corporations’ exploitation of minerals and water, this course considers how marginalized communities’ living conditions in Latin America are connected to governmental policies, transnational financial interests, and people’s participation in the global market. Candy Martinez.
Two 75-minute periods.
