Semester Offered: Spring
1 unit(s)

Advanced study in selected aspects of religion and contemporary philosophical and political theory.  May be taken more than once for credit when content changes.

Topic for 2023/24b: Ethics. A course centering on the ethical thought of Lithuanian-born, French-language, Jewish philosopher, Emmanuel Levinas, especially as he articulates his understanding of care and responsibility through his reading of Talmudic texts.  Levinas is set in relationship to the break with tradition—an inauguration of Jewish modernity—in the ethics and hermeneutics of Spinoza in the 16th-century, as well as the extension of his view of precariousness in the work of contemporary American-Jewish philosopher Judith Butler. Andrew Bush.

One 2-hour period.

Course Format: CLS
