FILM 337 - The Films of Ousmane Sembene 0.5 unit(s) This intensive is designed as a collective independent study to introduce students to the films of Ousmane Sembene, one of Africa’s most celebrated and pioneering filmmakers. Trained in Moscow at the Moscow Film School; writer of novels; and the director of such classics as Mandabi (1968), Xala (1975), Faat Kine (2000) and Moolaadé (2004), Sembene has been called the father of Black African cinema. By closely studying his films and completing course readings, students will learn in greater depth about his aesthetics and poetics. Students meet together as a group every other week (7 times a semester) for discussions of films and directed readings. The reading list includes scholars such as Manthia Diawara, Frank Ukadike, Hamid Naficy, Nugugi Wa Thiong’o, Teshome Gabriel, Sylvia Winter and Kobena Mercer. Mia Mask.
