ASIA 372 - Masterpieces of Japanese Literature in Classical Japanese Semester Offered: Spring 1 unit(s) (Same as JAPA 372 ) This course takes you through the beautiful landscape of traditional Japanese literature by reading selected texts in classical Japanese. Classical Japanese was the standard written language of Japan until the early 20th century and continues to be relevant to Japanese culture today. Knowledge and command of classical Japanese are crucial for studies such as Japanese history, literature, religion, and thoughts. Through the close reading of literary texts, we learn the essential grammar and structure of classical Japanese while exploring the literary tradition and cultural condition under which the literary works were created. Prerequisite(s): Two-years of Japanese language studies or the equivalent.
One 2-hour period.
