MEDS 249 - The Book: A Global History Semester Offered: Fall 1 unit(s) This course offers an historical view of books and printing from a global perspective. We begin with thematic discussions of early systems of writing, the ancient book, the medieval book, paper, bookbindings, printing, and illustration processes. We then examine the history of the book in particular places, starting with countries in Europe, and moving to other parts of the world, including Russia, the Far East, the Middle East, Africa, India, Australia and New Zealand, Latin America, and the United States. The course investigates not only the design and production of books around the world, but also their connection to society. The Archives & Special Collections Library with its rich holdings serves as a laboratory for the course. Guest speakers and one or more field trips enhance our study of key topics. Ronald Patkus.
Two 75-minute periods.
