STS 382 - Social History of Public Health

Societal forces have impacted human health throughout history. From smallpox to COVID-19, we will look at how outbreaks and diseases shape society. This course examines the social, political, and racial forces that determine the experiences of health in the past and present. Through case studies, using international and national examples, including cholera, HIV, unethical research practices, and polio, we analyze how the health status of people is affected by various social determinants. Students are asked to consider how understanding the past can be used as a tool for creating change for the future. Christie Van Horne.
