GRST 341 - Topics in Latin Literature Semester Offered: Spring 1 unit(s) Topic for 2022/23b: Seneca the Younger between Prose and Verse. Seneca the Younger was a prolific early-imperial Latin author who left extensive and influential works, including moral epistles, natural philosophical treatises, and verse dramas. In this course, we read selections of his work in both prose and poetry to get a sense of his style and his interests. Our readings culminate in the prose-verse hybrid of the Apocolocyntosis. Students will gain mastery over Senecan Latin and over the various meters of Latin drama. Through the consideration of relevant scholarly sources, they also gain familiarity with Seneca’s distinct intellectual approach to Stoic philosophy and literary theory. Over the course of the semester students work together with the professor to produce a selection and commentary of passages we read together. Del Maticic.
Prerequisite(s): GRST 246 or permission of the instructor.
