POLI 284 - Latin American Revolutions

Semester Offered: Fall
1 unit(s)
Latin America has long been synonymous with revolution, and with good reason. The long 20th Century began and ended with rebellion in Mexico; intervening years saw guerrilla warfare spreading like wildfire, with revolutionary victories in Cuba and Nicaragua; and today, radical movements fight an uphill battle for change under the mantle of the “Pink Tide.” The roots of revolution run far deeper, however. This course offers a long view of Latin American revolutionary processes, with Indigenous struggles against colonization, slave revolts, and the complex dynamics of 19th-century wars of independence providing the necessary background for grasping the movements of the present and aspirations of the future. George Ciccariello-Maher.

Two 75-minute periods.

Course Format: CLS
