PHIL 395 - Intensive Reading Philosophy

Semester Offered: Spring
1 unit(s)
An intensive study of a particular text or author offered by various members of the faculty with expertise in that text or author.

Topic for 2021/22b: Reading Marx. Participants in this course undertake a detailed, rigorous reading of Karl Marx’s Capital, Volume One. First published in 1867, Marx’s Capital is one of the most important texts in political philosophy. Over the course of the semester we read the book from cover to cover, focusing on the methodological approach developed by Marx over the course of the work. Students should have prior experience studying political philosophy. We read Capital in English, but students with any knowledge of German are encouraged to also consult the original. We meet once a week to discuss a substantial portion of the text. Students are expected to read carefully, contribute regularly to discussion, and produce weekly reading summaries of the assigned material. Jamie Kelly.

Prerequisite(s): Two Philosophy courses (preferably in political philosophy), or permission of the instructor.

One 3-hour period.

Course Format: INT
