AFRS 186 - On Mattering: Voices from the Movement and Beyond

Semester Offered: Fall
0.5 unit(s)

The “On Mattering: Voices from the Movement and Beyond” intensive is a speaker series designed as an interactive curricular opportunity to engage students in conversation with a range of emergent and seasoned activist knowledges being produced inside and outside the academy by folks working locally and nationally to shift political discourses of harm, safety, and belonging in response to the rise in public awareness and outcry against police brutality and the killings of unarmed black and brown people in communities across the U.S. and throughout the world.

On Mattering centers a range of local grassroots community organizers, activist poets, healing justice advocates and activist academics whose insight and offerings from New York to Brazil, from Puerto Rico to California whose work to advance black liberation, end racial injustice, and reimagine what democracy looks like is required for enrolled students but also made available to the campus community as a whole as an added resource from Africana Studies and the Prison Studies Correlate for advancing critical conversation about antiblack racism, the prison industrial complex, the criminalization of the poor and the erasure of histories of resistance from the collective consciousness. Jonathon Kahn and Jasmine Sayedullah.
