AFRS 182 - Reading the Qur’an Semester Offered: Fall 0.5 unit(s) (Same as RELI 182 ) This intensive explores the Qur’an, the central text of sacred revelation in Islam, through the ways that it has been read, recited, and interpreted by Muslims and non-Muslims throughout history. Themes include performance and sound, ethics and politics, environmental ethics, gender and family, technology, and translation and literary theory. The intensive is multi-lingual, and students are encouraged to integrate their competencies in any language/s into the course. Primary readings can be done in multiple languages, including Arabic. Students develop their own practices of reading, interpretation, and analysis as part of the class, which culminates in an independent creative project. Kirsten Wesselhoeft.
