GRST 385 - Sophocles Women of Trachis Semester Offered: Spring 0.5 unit(s) This half-unit intensive involves three stages, culminating in a production of a new translation of Sophocles’ Women of Trachis. Admission is by audition at the end of the fall semester.
The first stage involves a close study of the play, including secondary reading about the play, the production of Greek tragedy in antiquity, and discussion of the relevance of the play to contemporary audiences.
The second stage involves rehearsal and recording of an audio version of the play. This recording will accompany the publication of the text by Lever Press.
The third stage involves a full production of the play, directed by Abigail Lass ‘21 with guidance by Professor Kitzinger. It is anticipated that the production will happen both on the Vassar campus and at Poughkeepsie High School, with support from the Mellon Foundation. Rachel Kitzinger
