LALS 262 - Latin American Philosophy Semester Offered: Spring 1 unit(s) (Same as PHIL 262 ) A survey course in Latin American philosophy, conducted in English. We begin with available pre-colonial and Native American sources, including a peek into Aztec and Mayan metaphysics. We then move into colonial-era philosophy, where the issues of emancipation and the rights of indigenous groups and women were playing out on a global scale. This includes readings on Sor Juana, Bartolomé de las Casas, and Simón Bolívar. We then do a unit on the identity movement in the 19th and 20th century, where various minds were grappling with the problem and (im)possibility of forging a national identity. This unit might include readings on Martí, Vasconcelos, Ramos, Gracía, Alcoff, Schutte, and Zea. We end with a discussion of whether there is a distinctive Latino/a philosophy, and what philosophy in LatinAmerica looks like today. Sofia Ortiz-Hinojosa.
Two 75-minute periods.
