INTL 110 - International Study Travel

Semester Offered: Spring
1 unit(s)
Topic for 2018/19b: Borders and Brexit: Breaking Up Is Hard to Do. In a referendum held in 2016, the UK narrowly voted to leave the European Union. The Brexit debate concerned identity and national values. “Leave” advocates emphasized a need to protect the country’s independence and culture, framing their arguments around their resistance to migration. “Remainers” underscored the risks to the economy and a bright destiny of European identity. As Britain prepares to leave in March 2019, immediately after the trip, a number of border issues are at stake —between Ireland and Northern Ireland, the UK and the Continent, Spain and Gibraltar, and potentially England and Scotland (if the Scottish independence movement prevails). The Irish border question looms as the most problematic, having become “Brexit’s “intractable puzzle.”

The course takes a close look at British borders—present and historical—through the lens of the current debate and the questions about national identity raised. During two weeks the course moves through four capitals - Edinburgh, London, Belfast and Dublin – exploring issues of politics, culture and economics that cloud the future of the British Isles. David Kennett and Lizabeth Paravisini-Gebert.

One 3-hour period.
