ART 320 - Seminar in Medieval Art

Semester Offered: Fall
1 unit(s)
Topic for 2019/20a: Notre-Dame of Paris. This seminar invites you to explore the art and architecture of the cathedral of Paris from multiple vantage points and subject positions. We begin by framing the cathedral as a bustling social institution. Moving forward, we place the cathedral in the context of both the natural environment and the city in which it was built. By the end of the semester, we come to understand the motivations for constructing the monumental new sacred building between ca. 1160 and ca. 1350, and how the cathedral fit into and shaped the architectural landscape of medieval Paris. Lindsay Cook.

Prerequisite(s): Permission of the instructor.

One 2-hour period.
