LALS 289 - LatinX Performance

Semester Offered: Fall
1 unit(s)
(Same as WMST 289 ) The course explores how queer and trans/travesti/2spirit Latinx communities engage performance as a mode of surviving and thriving in the late capitalism in the Americas. Legal scholar and activist Dean Spade writes that the law can never be a primary mechanism by which marginalized communities seek restitution and justice. This course centers creativity—broadly construed as poetry, song, spoken word, and performance—as political, social, and personal forms of communication through which Latinx communities make their voices heard. Students do a final project on an artist of their choice that may (but need not) include a creative component. Throughout the course, we explore the borderlands between creative and “scholarly” writing, using Latinx performers as our guides. No artistic experience is necessary beyond a genuine interest in the material and openness to explore creatively. Elias Krell.

Two 75-minute periods.
