SOCI 287 - Human Rights and Human Wrongs

In this course we survey sociological theories and research human rights focusing on violations of human rights globally and in the United States. We explore the content of human rights norms as they were established to provide protections for individuals and groups worldwide. We examine theories of inequality and poverty, and review research on the effects of poverty on human development. In the course, we examine the connections between human rights violations and acts of genocide globally and in the U.S. We explore the consequences for humans when their rights are violated. We explore the impact of social movements to interpret their effects on advances in human rights protections for individuals nationally and globally. Ruth Thompson-Miller.
