FILM 180 - Writing About MoviesSemester Offered: Fall 1 unit(s) This course focuses on the reviews of famous film critics such as Pauline Kael, David Denby, and Jonathan Rosenbaum, not with the goal of turning students into reviewers, but as a springboard for examining great prose (and great movies). We look at what gives their writing grace, style, passion, and a personal tone of voice, and at some of the classic and contemporary films they discuss. We also slowly branch out into other genres of writing about film: interviews, autobiographies, and critical essays, to explore the variety of ways writers share their love of film and offer interpretations of great films’ meaning and importance. Ms. Kozloff.
Two 75-minute periods plus outside screenings.
Open only to freshmen; satisfies college requirement for a Freshman Writing Seminar.
