A study of the urban development of a Roman town with public buildings and centers of entertainment that gave shape to political life and civic pride. The houses, villas, and gardens of private citizens demonstrate intense social competition, as well as peculiarly Roman attitudes toward privacy, domesticity, and nature. Ms. D’Ambra.
