Alumnae and Alumni of Vassar College (AAVC)

Founded in 1871, the Alumnae and Alumni of Vassar College is an independently chartered corporation whose purpose is "to advance the interests of Vassar College." All graduates or former matriculated students of the college are considered active members, with voting privileges.

The management of the association is vested in a rotating board of 22 directors, including the AAVC president, who is chief officer of the alumnae/i association, chair of its board of directors, and a trustee. Six AAVC directors serve on Vassar's board of trustees. The executive director directs the affairs of the association in accordance with policies determined by the board. The association takes its direction from its 33,976–member constituency whose volunteer leadership, perspective, and energy add a special dimension to the college's resources.

Through skills–building workshops, publications on various aspects of volunteer work, administrative services, and consultative assistance, AAVC works closely with 70 classes and 50 clubs around the world to help ensure Vassar's future as an independent, coeducational liberal arts college of the highest quality. Through class, club, and affiliate group activities, alumnae/i are kept in touch with Vassar and each other, and are offered a range of opportunities to provide volunteer and financial support for the college. Reunion weekend and informal gatherings on and off campus are two examples of the ways in which classes maintain the Vassar connection. Clubs give the college visibility in this country and abroad, influence the quality and diversity of the undergraduate body through the work of their admission committees, contribute over $370,000 annually for scholarships, and serve their memberships by providing opportunities for career networking.

The link between the college and its alumnae/i is further strengthened by the association's annual fall council meeting, faculty–accompanied domestic and foreign travel programs, and the work of the affiliate groups: Triple AVC (African–American Alumnae/i of Vassar College), LAGAVC (Lesbian and Gay Alumnae/i of Vassar College), APAVC (Asian Pacific Alumnae/i of Vassar College), LAVC (Latino Alumnae/i of Vassar College), and JAVC (Jewish Alumnae/i of Vassar College).

The official publication of AAVC, the Vassar Quarterly, is published in the fall, winter, spring, and summer. All alumnae/i receive the Quarterly.

The AAVC offices are located at Alumnae House.

Alumnae House

The Alumnae House is headquarters for AAVC and is the center for alumnae/i activities. It was given to the college by two alumnae in 1924. Its Tudor–style architecture and gracious atmosphere make it a pleasant gathering place for alumnae/i, faculty, students, members of the administration and staff, and visitors to the campus. Reservations are required. For information, call 845–437–7100 or write AAVC–Alumnae House, 161 College Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603–2804.
